Item 8196
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this rare Blue and White Spongeware Bowl in the Clothespin Pattern. This bowl is so named because the exterior looks like a series of the old wooden clothespins standing side by side.
Circa 1900, this bowl came in three sizes. This is the largest size measuring 6" tall and 11 1/2" wide across the top (Terry Taylor and Terry & Kay Lowrance, Collector's Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware, p. 156).
This beauty features structured sponging with semi-circles inside the rim, vertical stripes outside the rim, large circles on the body, and a star on the bottom. An impressed star on the bottom as well. All the cobalt is rich and shiny. Comes with the original bail handle.
Excellent Condition. Some fine glaze crazing, and wear on the underside edge from use. No chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Typical manufacturing imperfections to include a partial glaze spot inside the rim (closeup).
