Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this fantastic rare 3 Gallon Merchant Jar made for Lee Tate, Morris Crossroads, Pennsylvania. This little crossroads in south Pittsburgh in the SW corner of Pennsylvania.
The decoration on the jar indicates that it was made by James Hamilton of Greensboro, Pa. James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Circa 1880, this beauty features Applied Handles with Cobalt Accents, Broad Stripe Top and Bottom, Large Roses in the Upper Corners, the Company Advertising in the Middle, and the Capacity Number Flanked by More Roses at the Bottom. Light gray glaze and dark cobalt decoration for strong contrast. Stands 15 1/2" tall
An interesting feature is the symbol of the cross used as part of the town name!
Excellent Condition. A couple minor 1/4" chips inside the rim and some stain runs on the back. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
