Item 10285
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 4 Gallon Redware Crock from Whitewater, Wisconsin.
"There were at least four earthenware potteries in Whitewater between 1846 and 1882. They used local clay and produced mainly unglazed flower pots and urns, but also lead-based glazed pottery which gave them a distinctive yellow/orange color. Some pieces were also brush decorated with magnesium. They are difficult to attribute to a particular Whitewater pottery because they were rarely, if ever, signed. These potteries included Warren and Michael Cole (father & son), George G. and James C. Williams (father & son), George Dann, John Milz, Michael Ohnhaus, Rufus Cheney and probably others (thanks go to http://www.mrbottles.com/Category/WisconsinStoneware).
This beauty features the Yellow/Orange Lead-Based Glaze, Tooled Rim and Shoulder, and a Brushed Cobalt Double Tulip. Typically the decoration from Whiteware was magnesium, but here we have an example with bold cobalt. Measures 11 3/4" tall and 11 1/4" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Two pings on the rim (1 3/4" behind the left handle and 1/2" in front of the right handle- closeups), nibbles around the bottom of the tooled rim, and three 3/8" chips on the base. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
I believe this is the only Whitewater piece I have ever had to sell.
