Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 3 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "W. Smith, Greenwich, New York."
This is the work of Washington Smith who made stoneware in Manhattan from the founding of his pottery in 1833 until 1879. He turned the pottery over to his son in 1863 upon his retirement Very few marked pieces like this one survive (William Ketchum, Jr., Potters and Potteries of New York State, 1650-1900, pp. 59-61)
Dating around 1840, this crock a Tall Rim, Embossed Band at the Shoulder, Large Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent at the Handle Terminals, Pottery Stamp, and Cobalt Tornado. Measures 9 3/4" tall and 11" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A 1" chip inside the rim, a 1/2" chip outside the rim, two 1/2" chips at the base, a 3" hairline on the back bottom that wraps under 4" (closeup), and some scattered staining from use. No restoration.
