Item 7859
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 1 Gallon Stoneware Canteen made by the Whites Pottery of Utica, New York.
Dating between 1890 and 1907, this piece is a wonderful example of the skill that the Whites Pottery had gained in molded stoneware during those years. This piece is not found in Christopher Bensch, The Blue and the Gray: Oneida County Stoneware, and is the only one of two examples I have ever had to sell.
This beauty features a Bordered Scene with Two Polar Bears in a Pine Forest (possibly auditioning for a Coca-Cola commercial!). There are also floral handle holders, original bail handle, and a fancy border around the back (which once likely had a merchant paper label since the interior spout points to this side). Measures 9 3/4" in diameter and 4 1/2" wide.
Very Good Condition. A 3/8" chip on the back of the spout, and some surface lines on the bottom center as shown, some on the making. No stains or restoration. Some surface firing lines on the shoudler in the making.
