Item 10654
Coming to you by Doc's Crocks is this early 3 Gallon Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "S. Purdy."
This is the mark of Solomon Purdy who came to Ohio in 1812 and made pottery in Zanesville before moving to Mogadore in Portage County in the 1830's to make pottery. He ran the pottery until 1840 when he turned it over to his son, Henry. The heavy nature of this jar and the light gray clay indicate that this jar was made during his Mogadore days (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 17-27).
This beauty features a Large Size, Ovoid Form, and the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash. Stands 16" tall.
Good Condition. Two small chips on the right side of the spout (1/8", 1/4"), two chips on the bae (1/4", 1/2"), and some staining and wear around the middle from use. No hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
