Item 10585
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Semi-Ovoid Jug.
The distinctive decoration indicates that this is the work of Abial Price of Middletown Point, New Jersey who ran his pottery from 1840 to his death in 1852. It has a simplified version of the decoration as is found on his rare field jug as illustrated in M. Lelyn Branin, The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey, p. 114-115. (see Branin, pp. 194-195 for more discussion of this potter). It is probably not Ingells from Taunton, MA who used a similar decoration because the spout is not his form.
This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Tooled Shoulder, and a Brushed Cobalt Triple Tulip Decoration. A plethora of leaves gives way to three tulip blossoms. Stands 11 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some scattered staining and a narrow 1/2" chip at the base. No hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Some chipping on the top of the spout from separation from a piece of stoenware above it in the making.
