Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Decorated Stoneware Butter Crock made and stamped under the handle "R. C. R., Phila."
This is the work of Richard Remmey who made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Tooled Rim with Groove for Ease of Tying a Cover Over the Top, Applied Handles with Cobalt Accent, Pottery Stamp under One Handle, and a Garland of Three Large Brushed Cobalt Leaves on Each Side. Very Bold Cobalt! Measures 9 1/4" tall and 10" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. A minor 1" sliver flake inside the rim, and a series of little chips on the outside of the rim (closeup). No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Some bubbles in the cobalt of a couple of leaves in the making.
