Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "Stedman & Seymour, New-Haven ."
This is the mark of Absalom Stedman who worked in New Haven from 1825 to 1833, and for a brief period with one of the members of the Seymour family of potters (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 57-58).
Dating around 1830, this beauty features an Early Ovoid Form with Tall Rim and Scribed Shoulder, Cobalt Accent at the Handle Terminals, and Impressed Pottery Stamp Washed in Cobalt. Measures 13" tall and 8 1/2" wide across the top.
Very Good Condition. Some residual paint inside, six chips inside the rim (1/4" to 1/2") and three outside the rim on the left side (1/4" to 1/2"), and a very faint 2 1/2" vertical line on the back at the bottom above a chip in the making (closeup). No restoration.
