Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "Stedman & Seymour, New-Haven ."
This is the mark of Absalom Stedman who worked in New Haven from 1825 to 1833, and for a brief period with one of the members of the Seymour family of potters (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 57-58).
Dating around 1830, this beauty features an Early Ovoid Form with Tall Rim, Cobalt Accent at the Handle Terminals, and Impressed Pottery Stamp Washed in Cobalt. Stands 9 1/4" tall.
Good Condition. Three chips on the back of the rim (1/4" to 1/2"), a 1 1/2" chip on the face of the back handle terminal on the left side, a line across the base of the front handle terminal on the right side (closeup 1), and a hairline across the bottom coming up the back 3" (closeups 2 & 3). No inner rim or base chips, cracks, stains, or restoration.
