Item 10954
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 10" Stoneware Jar attributed to Stephen Ward of
of West Brownsville, Pennsylvania.
Stephen Ward took over the pottery of Offord and Federer in West Brownsville in 1867 and ran it until about 1880. He only worked 6 months a year with a two man crew, so not many pieces were made and fewer survive (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 174).
This beauty features Six Stripes and an Eagle. Two straight stripes and a wavy stripe frame the eagle top and bottom in different configurations. The eagle bears a federal shield as a breastplate and holds a clutch of arrows on one talon and a sprig in the other. Stands 10" tall.
Exceptional Condition. As made. No damage of any kind. Some overglaze on the back and just slightly oval on top in the making.
A great example of the Pennsylvania Stoneware with an Eagle.
