Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 Gallon Stoneware Jug stamped "Binghamton, N.Y."
This is the mark of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Utica Pottery. He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty features a Small 1 Gallon Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Bird on a Branch Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup. The bird sports a dotted breast adn many wing and tail feathers. Bright cobalt used throughout the decoration. Stands dotted wing, and fantail with 9 feathers. The orchid has two branches with a blossom each. This was a signature decoration for W. Roberts. Stands 11 1/8" tall.
Exceptional Condition. As made. No damage of any kind. Fine bubbles in the thicker part of the cobalt in the making.
