    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by "W. Roberts, Binghamton, N.Y."
     
    This is the mark of William Roberts, son-in-law of Noah White of Whites Utica Pottery.  He founded a branch of the family business in Binghamton in 1848 and ran it until 1888 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
     
    This beauty features the Pottery Stamp and Capacity Number with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Dotted Bird on an Orchid Branch Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup.  The bird sports an expressive face, striped breast, dotted wing, and fantail with 9 feathers.  The orchid has two branches with a blossom each.  This was a signature decoration for W. Roberts.   Stands 11" tall. 
     
    Excellent Condition.  A 1/2" flake inside the rim and a 1" surface ping on the right handle (closeup).  That's it!  No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.  Two surface drying lines in the making:  1" inside the rim and 6" semi-circular on the underside.  Fine bubbles in the cobalt in the making.
