Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Rare 3 Gallon Stoneware Pitcher made and Stamped by "W. Smith, Greenwich, New York."

This is the work of Washington I. Smith who founded a pottery in Greenwich in 1833 which continued under the guidance of his son until 1879 (William C. Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 63).

Marked pieces by this maker are rare.  The extra large size of this pitcher and the fact that it bears a strong pottery mark may indicate that it was a display piece used for advertising and proudly shown at the pottery.

This beauty features a Large Size, Tall Neck with Tooled Rim, Bulbous Body,  Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Brushed Cobalt Flower.  Stands 15" tall.

Very Good Condition with Professional Restoration.  A narrow 1/2" chip on the underside at the edge.  Profession restoration for a hairline from the rim to the left of the spout down to where my pen is pointing in the closeup and then as a very faint horizontal line across the middle of the left side that did not require restoration.  Typical manufacturing imperfections.
