Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this imposing 3 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "Whites, Utica, N.Y."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 69-70).
This beauty features a Large Size, Pottery Stamp, and one of White's signature decorations: an Orchid Executed with a Slip Cup. The orchid has four leaves and a drooping blossom with two petals-- all with horizontal striping. Rich bright and shiny cobalt applied with a slip cup. Gorgeous! Stands 16 1/8" tall.
Excellent Condition. A shallow and narrow chip with 1" surface line below on the right side of the spout (closeup), a bit of staining on each side, and two chips on the underside at the edge (3/8", 1 1/4"). No hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
